U.14 Update

Clann na nGael 2-11; Padraig Pearses 1-10

Clann’s under-16 team had a hard-fought victory over our neighbours Pearses in Johnstown on Monday last. Exchanges were even all through with the Clann boys establishing a 4-point lead at the interval, a lead they maintained until the end, despite a late Pearses’ rally.

Pearses began well to lead by 0-4 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. Clann came back well with a series of points of their own, and a goal by Gary Mulvihill helped them to lead at the interval by 1-7 to 0-6.

Pearses started well again in the second half and an early goal and point levelled the scoreline. Once again Clann had a period of dominance and another Gary Mulvihill goal helped them to a 5 point lead. The home team then had to withstand a late Pearses’ onslaught before emerging victorious at the end.

Clann’s victory was built on a fine display by the defence, which dealt capably with a potent Pearses forward-line. Neil Hannon brought off some great saves in goal and his kickouts were long and accurate. Alan McManus and Thomas Lennon held the centre well, Shane Gavin and Ollie Hynes covered brilliantly in the corners, and Eoin Connaughton and Luke Gavin worked hard all through. After a slow start Jason Mulvey and Michael Harrington asserted themselves at midfield to give Clann a slight edge in this area. While Gary Mulvihill got the vital goals, he was ably assisted by all his forward colleagues. Substitutes Rory Colgan, Tomás O’Neill and Oisin O’Flaherty all played their parts in helping Clann to hold onto their lead in the closing quarter.

Team: N.Hannon; S. Gavin, A. McManus, O. Hynes; E. Connughton, T. Lennon, L. Gavin; M. Harrington, J. Mulvey; A. Milton, I. Harney, C. Ryan; K. Greasley, C. O’Reilly (capt.), G. Mulvihill.

Subs: T. O’Neill, R. Colgan, O. O’Flaherty.

Scorers: G. Mulvihill (2-0); I. Harney (0-4); C. O’Reilly and A. Milton (0-2 each); C. Ryan, J. Mulvey and T. Lennon (0-1 each).

Roscommon Minor Football League Div 1 2019

Clann na nGael 1-13 Strokestown 2-9

Clann minors had their third outing on Fri night last when they visited Strokestown to face the local team. This was a Clann team's first time to play in the well presented Strokestown pitch under their new lights.

The first half was a lively affair with both sides trying to recover from defeats in their previous round of games. Clann opened the scoring and led by 3 points before Strokestown opened their account. Both teams continued to swop scores until just before half time when Clann struck for a goal to lead at half time by 1-6 to 0-5.

Clann opened the second half well and for opening quarter of the half continued to dominate but did not always make their dominance count. This started to come back to haunt them in the final 10 minutes when they were outscored by the home side by 2-2 to 0-1. However this one point was vital in that period as in the end the visitors ran out winners by a single point on a scoreline of 1-13 to 2-9.

Both sides gave an honest account of themselves in what was an entertaining game for the small attendance gathered.

Clann worked hard for their victory but know that they will have to up their performance in the remaining games in the league.
