Connacht Championship

The Matrix Bathrooms / Kennedys Supermacs sponsored Clann na nGael Senior team represented Roscommon in the Connacht Club Senior Championship Quarter-Final against the London champions Tir Chonaill Gaels in Dr. Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon.

Clann had the better of early exchanges as the visitors struggled to get to the pace of the game. Five points in the opening quarter, three from placed balls from the ever reliable boot of Donie Shine and two from full forward Ciaran Lennon gave Clann a comfortable four point lead. The London champions had their golden patch mid-way through the half and replied with four points in a six minute period to leave just two point s between the teams. Tir Chonaill Gaels continued to press and were awarded with a penalty as the match entered first half injury time. The penalty was emphatically executed to give the Londoners a one point lead at the interval on a score of 1-6 to 0-8. Clann had it all to do in the second half!

Once again Clann had the best of the early second half exchanges and two early points from Donie Shine within the first five minutes gave the locals the lead once more, but Tir Chonaill continued to press and went into the lead again on the 42nd minute. The turning point of the match came with 14 minutes of the second half played when Graham Pettit found himself bursting through onto a breaking ball and hammered the ball to the net from a tight angle. The goal gave Clann the lead and this lead was not to be relinquished for the remainder of the match. Tir Chonaill Gaels to their credit never gave up and responded with a point from play two minutes later. The visitors had played two county finals the previous two weeks and this started to show in the final quarter as Clann were the fresher team and tagged on additional points from Ultan Harney, another from Donie Shine from a placed ball, Darra Pettit and Ciaran Lennon to secure the victory for Clann. A magnificent save by our stand in keeper David Finneran in injury time was crucial in securing the win. The final score was Clann na nGael 1-15 Tir Chonaill Gaels 1-10.

We would like to thank Tir Chonaill Gaels for a fine competitive match and congratulate them on winning the London Senior Championship. Clann now play All-Ireland Champions Corofin of Galway in the Connacht Semi-Final next Sunday in Hyde Park.

The Clann team and scorers were as follows: David Finneran, Darra Pettit (0-1), Stephen Flynn, Ronan Gavin, David Connaughton (0-1), Graham Pettit (1-0), Shane Pettit, Ultan Harney (0-1), Cathal Shine, Cathal Callinan, Donal Shine (0-9 7F), Emmet Kenny, David McManus, Ciaran Lennon (0-3), Jamie Fahy.
