Tormey's League Finals 2018The Tormey's League finals took place in Johnstown last Saturday (22nd September). The Tormey's league is played between U9 and U10 boys from Clann and neighbouring clubs over three weekends in September. The tournament is kindly sponsored by Tormey's Solicitors.
This year saw a very exciting lineup for the finals. There were head to heads between Athlone and Tubberclare, Clann and Garrycastle, Ballinasloe and St. Dominic's, and between St. Brigid's and Padraig Pearses. There were fantastic displays of football on offer, and the skill level of these boys was wonderful to see. We no doubt witnessed future stars of Roscommon, Westmeath and Galway.
Clann would like to thank the boys and mentors from all the clubs for making this year's competition such a success. The U10 management would also like to thank the referees who gave their time so willingly, some for more than one weekend. We would also like to thank the Minor Board for their support of the tournament and the grounds committee for the fabulous condition of the pitch and the grounds.
We look forward to welcoming all the clubs back for the competition again in 2019!
U14 Boys Div 1 Sheild FinalClann 2-07 3-04 St Brigids
A thrilling contest fought out in St Ciarans (Fuerty) saw these two South Roscommon rivals draw level last Sunday. Given that each had claimed victory over the other once during the season, it was always going to be close. A quick start by Brigids caught Clann off guard, and they claimed a goal inside the first minute. Less than a minute later however, a Shane Gavin goal at the other end of the pitch had things all even again. After a hectic start, the game turned into a tense and closely fought battle, with no further scores claimed until midway through the half, although Clann were very wasteful of several attempts – wides that they would rue later.
Later in the half, buoyed by the strong breeze, Clann started to settle into a scoring routine, and claimed several well taken points, followed at the end of the half with a Tomas O’Neill goal. This brought Clann to an 8 point lead at half time (2-6 to Brigids 1-1), on paper at least, but the impact of the strong breeze meant that in effect, Clann were barely more than level, and would have to defend with their lives in the second half.
So it came to pass, with Brigids starting strongly in the second half, and with a quick goal and point, they came to within 4 points of Clann. To their credit though, Clann were defending really well, and holding up well to the challenge. A nervy time though, as Brigids claimed another point in the closing minutes of the game to leave the sides only a kick of a ball apart. While Clann defended with great resolve, Brigids attacked with spirit, and in the dying seconds of injury time, shook the net one last time to score a last gasp goal which drew the sides level.
Clann scorers T. O’Neill (1-2), S. Gavin (1-0), O O’Flaherty (0-2), E. Quinn (0-1), C. Kelly (0-1), J. Gavin (0-1)
Both teams get to line up all over again over the next week or so, and if today was anything to go by, it should be another exciting battle between these great neighbours. Thanks as always to the Clann faithful who came up to Fuerty in great numbers to support the lads. Looking forward to that same support again in the replay – Clann Abu!
