Senior O'Rourke Cup

The Clann na nGael Matrix Bathrooms / Monksland Filling station & Supermacs sponsored Senior Team were in action last Friday evening in Johnstown against our near neighbours St Brigids in the O’Rourke Cup. The match was played in ideal weather conditions on an immaculately presented Johnstown pitch.

The first half was an evenly contested affair however it was Clann that started the sharpest and were two points to the good after nine minutes thanks to two points from play from Donie Shine. Brigids levelled the match on 15 minutes before Donie executed an excellent free from over 50 yards out. The half time score was level at five points apiece with Donie Shine executing all of the Clann scores.

The backs were on top in the opening period of the second half as neither team scored for the first 15 minutes of the second period. Two points from frees from Donie in quick successions gave Clann a two point lead with 13 minutes to play. It was at this stage that Brigids took control of the game and three goals within a five minute period gave Brigids a seven point lead and effectively ended the game as a contest. Ross Naughton scored a consolation goal for Clann late in the game to leave the final score at Clann 1-7 St. Brigids 3-8.

Community Games

U10 boys County Champions in Community Games! The Drum/Clonown squad retained the trophy in Ballyleague on Saturday with two excellent displays. In the semi-final they overcame Strokestown and went on to defeat a gallant Aughrim/Kilmore squad in the final. A gusty and focused display from all players, in very warm conditions, insured that the trophy remains in the parish for another year. Congratulations to all the boys and good luck to them as they go on to represent Roscommon in the Connaught competition.

Squad: Oisin McLoughlin, Luke Wheatley, Eoin Dunning, John Timlin, Niall Ward, Cian Gilhooley, Brian Finneran, Ciarán Cummins, Conor Fennell, Barra Powell, Dan Costello, Logan Abbey, Darragh Flynn, Josh Connolly (Shane Doran away)

Clann na nGael Festival of football

Johnstown was delighted to host the annual festival of football blitz last Friday. Pupils from all five schools in our parish (plus some from Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí) attended the event.
The teams were mixed with pupils from the various schools playing on the same teams in a blitz style format. A very enjoyable day was had by all with so many kids getting a chance to play gaelic football. The club wish to acknowledge the generosity of the 30 or more club volunteers who gave up their time to help with the running of the event, be it coaching, refereeing or clubhouse duties.

The event could not happen without the cooperation of the principals, teachers and staff of the various schools and we thank them all for their input and ongoing support for the club. As many as 170 girls and boys participated in the blitz with an excellent standard of football on display and all games played in a great spirit.
