Senior Championship

The Matrix Bathrooms / Monksland Filling station & Supermacs sponsored Senior Team were back in Championship action on Sunday in Johnstown. This was the re-scheduled match that had been postponed two weeks ago.

The first half was an even contest with little between the teams. Clann had the advantage of the first half wind but did not make use of the amount of chances that they were presented with. Kilmore registered the first score of the game on five minutes but this was cancelled out by a Donie Shine effort two minutes later. Donie added three more scores from placed balls in the next fifteen minutes to leave the score after twenty minutes 0-4 to 0-2 in Clann’s favour. Kilmore to their credit finished the half well and matched Clann score for score in the last ten minutes of the half to leave the half time score Clann 0-8 Kilmore 0-5.

The introduction of Jonathan Dunning at half time proved crucial as he orchestrated the Clann forward line and scored a goal and a point within seven minutes of the re-start. Cathal Shine scored a hugely inspirational long range effort on sixteen minutes following great set up play from Donie Shine and Cathal Callinan. Donie killed the game off as a contest midway through the second half when he scored Clann’s second goal to leave Clann leading 2-12 to 0-7. Further points from Johnny Dunning, Cathal Callinan, Matt Scally and a free from Donie left the final score Clann 2-17 Kilmore 0-10. Clann now go back into league campaign action and await our next three championship matches in August having secured maximum points from our two matches to date.

The Clann team and scorers were: David Finneran, Darra Pettit, Stephen Flynn, Ronan Gavin, Jack Connaughton, Feargal Lennon, Emmet Kenny (0-1), Cathal Shine (0-2), Graham Pettit, David Connaughton (0-1), Donie Shine (1-7 0-6F), Cian McManus, Jamie Fahy, Ciaran Lennon, Ross Naughton (0-2). Subs used: Jonathon Dunning (1-2), Cathal Callinan (0-1), Matt Scally (0-1), Shane Pettit, David Flynn.

Best Wishes to Kilmore's Dermot Foley who suffered a serious injury near the end of the match, we wish his a speedy recovery to full fitness.

Minor Div.1 League Semi-Final

Clann na nGael 3-14 Castlerea St. Kevins 2-4
On Sat evening Clann Minors renewed acquantances with Castlerea in O'Rourke Park in Castlerea in the Minor League semi-final. The game itself was played in dry but breezy weather conditions. However an earlier heavy downpour left the pitch greasy.

In their previous meeting in the last round of the league, Castlerea has deservedly beaten the Clann lads in Johnstown so the panel travelled with a point to prove. The basis for the win was laid in the opening half which Clann dominated and went in at half time leading by 0-10 to 0-2 having played with the aid of the light breeze.

Clann added a further 1-1 at the beginning of the second half but then came the expected Castlerea comeback and by the 15th minute of the half the lead had been cut to 5 points. Clann however steadied the ship and added a couple of points before two late goals seen them run out winners.

The scoreline probably flattered Clann in the end as Castlerea were always in the game and never let their heads drop in a game that was keenly contested but well controlled by the ref.
Clann will now meet neighbours, St. Brigid's in the league final next weekend.

On a different note the panel of players and management would like to wish Andrew Kelly a speedy recovery from his injury that he received during the week. Hopefully his absence from training & playing will be short.

Clann Panel: S. Seery, M. Mc Manus, P. Mc Manus, J. Mc Manus, D. Duff, A. Harney, C. Lennon, C. O'Brien, O. Rock, A. Wall, D. Sumner, O. Lennon, F. Lennon, M. Hanley, S. Ryan, S. Henry, L. Donnelly, A. Francis, C. Farrell, R. Hardiman, C. Costello, Andrew Kelly, Anthony Kelly, R.Moran, D. Reynolds, C. Fallon Mc Gowan.

U.14 Challenge

In lieu of training last Tuesday evening, the U.14 squad played host to their Westmeath neighbours, as they welcomed Caulry to Johnstown.

With no competitive match for either division until the League finals in early June, both teams need to keep up the game practice, and this was an ideal opportunity to do so, against a well set up Caulry side, who have won 3 out of 4 games so far in the Westmeath Division 1.

Even with some players rested, and others out due to injury, there was still in excess of 30 Clann players to field, so it was agreed to run 3 periods of 20 minutes each. First period was an exciting contest, with brisk play from both sides. Interesting also to learn the different rule variations each club must abide by, e.g. 2-touch vs open play, kickouts from the hand, vs off the ground etc. Clann finished slightly ahead at the first break, when the second squad took the pitch.

As the game resumed, the visitors exhibited several very nice passages of linked up play, against a Clann side that appeared more lacklustre. As Caulry started to draw closer with a series of well taken points, Clann made basic errors, allowing the visitors to draw level, shortly before the second break.

In the final period, the squad was mixed up again, and buoyed on by an inspiring team talk, Clann kicked into gear again to contest the game, and finish out strongly. Plenty of lessons to learn from what was an entertaining and useful experience. Many thanks to John Lawless and the Caulry management team, as well as Sean Feeney as for his careful guidance of the match as referee.

U.10 Blitz

On Saturday last we hosted an U.10 Go Games blitz in Johnstown. Unfortunately, St. Dominic's and Pearses could not make it on the day but St. Brigid's and Roscommon Gaels both brought two teams each. As a result all 27 clann boys still got plenty of pitch time across 4 tough games and showed great skill and teamwork.

Special thanks to all parents who helped with tea and treats in clubhouse and to our 'young whistlers' (refs). Training continues as normal during the week and new players (born 2007 or 2008) are always welcome!

U.14 Girls League

Clann na nGael’s U-14 girls travelled to Elphin on Wednesday 17th May, to play Elphin/Kilmore in their latest League game.
The home team, an amalgamation of two strong clubs, provided good opposition on the night, but in the end were overcome by a more agile and organised Clann team. The Clann girls took their scores very well, particularly in the first half, at the end of which the Clann girls led by 4-4 to 1-0.
While Clann were a little wasteful with possession early in the second half, the girls still went on to score a further 2-4, with Elphin tagging on another goal before the game ended, on a scoreline of 6-8 to 2-0.
As always, this was yet another great team effort by all involved. The girls play Eire Óg for their next League game on Wednesday 24th May.

Panel: Amanda Ryan, Amy O’Brien, Anna Golden, Aoife McGoldrick, Ava Brady, Caireann McGoldrick (3-1), Caoilin McClean (1-0), Caoimhe Kelly (1-0), Casey O’Neill, Danielle Gately, Eimear Naughton, Éimhín Feeney (0-1), Eva Bea Mulligan, Giollaiosa Jamil, Grace Hannon (0-5), Isabelle Quinn, Lucia Reynolds (1-1), Mia Macken, Niamh Jordan, Niamh McTeague, Orla Kildea, Rachel O’Brien, Sarah Shine, Tara O’Neill, Vivienne Harney-Nolan.

Girls U.12 Championship

Our girls travelled to Boyle last Monday evening and made it two wins from two against a weakened home side. With the help of the elements, Clann built up a first half lead with good scores from Shauna McEvilly, Hope Glynn and Keira Timlin.

In the second half Clann continued to dominate with fine performances from Chloe Shanahan, Caoimhe Dolan and Shauna Kenny. Well done to all the girls who travelled and performed strongly on what was a difficult evening for football.

G4M&O's

Our Gaelic 4 Mother's & Other's team were deeply saddened to hear the news of our team member Rosie's daughter, Lisa Dolan.
Lisa, who fought a long brave battle, was a strong supporter of the club and often stood on the sideline to cheer on Rosie and the rest of the Mother's and Other's team. Our deepest sympathy goes to Rosie, Sean, her sister Laura, her boyfriend Oisin and extended family.
