Senior Ladies Player of the Year 2016
This years Senior Ladies player of the Year started her ladies Gaelic Football playing career at an early age. She represented her School, Club, County and College.
She won many honours with the club over the years. She has won one U-12, two U-14, two U-16, one Intermediate County Championship, one Intermediate Connaught Championship and one Senior League medal. She was a key player of the 2002 team that marginally lost out in the Intermediate All-Ireland Club final. In 2006 she won player of the year.
However, after completing her Leaving Certificate in 2006 this player went on to pursue her career and unfortunately was no longer able to continue to play for the club. Our loss was the Armed Forces gain. She became a cadet in the Army. While in the force and while in college in NUI Galway she continued playing Gaelic Football together with her much loved other sport, basketball, where she won many titles.
This player has lived away from home for a number of years and is living in Kildare at the moment. We nearly lost her when she was asked to join her local club, Moorefield United.
But thankfully she knew she could not play for any other club but her beloved Clann na nGael. In 2015 we were delighted to welcome this player back to the fold. It was brilliant to see her hunger and determination back. Her energy and enthusiasm was evident at every session. Her leadership both on and off the pitch was second to none.
Her all-round qualities, her versatility and commitment to the team gave us no doubt but to call this player up to captain this talented bunch of girls. She took on this role as expected, led by example, pushed herself to her limits and challenged the girls along with her. She always had words of wisdom for her team-mates and is a role model to have within the club. Nothing was too much to ask from this player during the year. She rarely missed a session even though she was travelling from Kildare.
Congratulations to the Clann na nGael Senior Ladies Player of the Year 2016, Emma Harney.
As Emma is currently serving in the Lebanon, her award was collected by her parents, Donie and Helen.
